Kelton’s kindergarten is still going great. He’s learning to read! He’s working really hard on his "popcorn words" and enjoying the starter books that his school sends home for him to read. He’s also learning new things with numbers...like counting by fives or tens. And we’ve been working with him on simple addition and subtraction.
We found out just the other day that there is a little girl at school that he’s calling his girlfriend. Jamie saw them come out of the school together and she was just talking his ear off. He said her name is Ryan and that she calls him "teddy bear."
Kelton has decided (on his own) that he has a preferred pronunciation of his name. He was breaking his name apart while reading it, and when he was just looking at the "ton" part, he said, this spells "ten"... I of course told him it actually spells "ton". We talked about the differences a bit, and he has since been telling everyone that his name is "Kel-ten" and not "Kel-ton".
Despite his preferences on his real name, we still call him all sorts of things: Kelt, Kelt-o, K-Tron, Tron, K, K-Troll, Cletus, Buddy, and Buddy-Bear.
Kelton had a lot of fun at Halloween. He went in a black-and-white prisoner costume which included a little hat, burglar mask, and a ball-and-chain for his foot. It was a costume that matched Isla’s little policewoman outfit. He also pretty well designed his own jack-o-lantern face, which included some plastic, glow-in-the-dark monster teeth that Nana Hisch bought him.
Our new house has been under construction for a while now. Kelton has LOVED watching it go up, and he’s always watching to see if the workers are out at the house when we drive past. It’s pretty funny, because he’ll give people tours of the house. One of the funniest parts is when he gets to Isla’s room he informs them, that she gets the room that is over the walk-out basement so that the boys can’t get her! He heard us say that once as a joke, and he latched on to it! Kelton is debating which room he wants still. He knows our preference, but he’s really considering another room because he could see Grandma and Grandpa Luhring’s house out that window. We’ll see which one he ends up with...

Kelton’s first day of Kindergarten was last Thursday!
We’d been talking to him about it for weeks to try and warm him up to the idea. He was mostly looking forward to it.
When Jamie drove him up to the school that morning he was amazed at how many kids were there. Quite a few more than he was used to at pre-school!
Jamie said it didn’t take him long before he was acting goofy, making faces, and making other kids and parents laugh. When she left, he was smiling and in a good mood!
After school was over, one of the first things he mentioned was that he was disappointed because one girl didn’t want to be his girlfriend. Yeah, he’s already after the ladies!
He was happy to find out that one boy he knew from pre-school was in his class this year. So at least he had one familiar face.
For lunch he ate corn-dogs, cookies and peaches. He told mommy that he didn’t want to eat those "lemons." She told him they weren’t lemons they were peaches, and he said they were yellow and not orange and he wasn’t going to eat them.
Jamie asked him if he had any trouble with the milk cartons. He said he knew how to open them already because Grandma Luhring taught him how to do it on the airplane when we went on vacation with them (over a year ago)!
He told Grandma Luhring that he learned his name in school that first day. She reminded him he already knew his name, and he said, "Well, I learned it better."
Sitting on the couch with Jamie that evening he pulled out a handful of rocks from his pocket. "These are kindergarten rocks," he said. Apparently he got pea-gravel rocks in his shoes during recess and later got them out in the classroom...put them in his pockets for safe keeping.
We asked him if he needed a shower before bed that night, and he first said no, but then he suggested that maybe he should because he needs to smell good for his new friends.
The second day of kindergarten went well also! He really likes it. He seemed bummed that he wasn’t going to be going back on Saturday.

Kelton has been enjoying his summer break. For a while he was getting nervous about going to Kindergarten in a few weeks, but we’ve been talking a lot about it and working with him on his alphabet, numbers, following instructions, and basic math. He’s really started to do pretty well with all of it. He has a workbook of things to do, and he truly enjoys going through it and completing the tasks. He doesn’t enjoy flash cards as much, but now that he’s getting more of them right it’s not so hard to get him to do them.
His favorite things to do include anything outside (no matter how hot it is!), catching frogs, drawing/painting, telling stories, video games, and to "fight pillows" with Daddy.
We just moved from Evansville back into Haubstadt. We’re living across the road from Grandma and Grandpa Luhring in their rent house while we build a new house. Before moving in we did some remodeling, and every time we brought him out he’d immediately run up to their house. Back-and-forth, back-and-forth...I’m surprised he didn’t wear a path in the grass between the houses! He transitioned very well to the new house -- I think he likes it here. The first night he slept at the rent house he was the last one to wake up in the morning. He came slowly walking down the stairs, came in to the kitchen rubbing his eyes and said, "I’m gonna go see Grandpa." We convinced him he should at least eat breakfast and get changed out of his jammies first.
He’s been spending a lot of time with Grandma and Grandpa Luhring, as you can imagine. He’s been helping Grandpa with outside work including picking strawberries and blackberries, trimming back plants, and driving the tractor around.
Last weekend Kelton went out with Grandpa and Daddy for an outdoor adventure. We took him down to the creek in our woods. We had to walk through some rows of corn to get there. He loved it! We threw rocks, built a dam, and walked on a tree-bridge. Good times! He’s going to love it out in the country!
Kelton just got back from a vacation to Myrtle Beach with Mommy, Isla, Nana (Mary), and Aunt "Donna". Of course he had a blast at the beach and at the hotel’s special kids’ water park. They also got to see some fireworks, which Kelton loves!

Kelton’s pre-school is just about over! He’s a bit apprehensive about starting Kindergarten next year, because he knows he’ll be moving and have new friends.
He’s really grasped on to counting recently. Notably the recognition of written numbers has progressed, and understanding the repetition of base-10 and getting up to 100 and beyond. He’s also been good about simple math, things like how many he’d have left if some were taken away.
He’s kind of hit-and-miss on the alphabet. Some days he does better than others. And I assume it’s partly what they’re doing at pre-school but when he says a word "starts with", it’s all phonetic rather than alphabetic. He’ll say, "Brandon starts with ‘Bran’."
He loves stories! He loves us to read him stories, but even more he loves it when we make up stories (I think Grandpa Luhring had something to do with that). Anytime I take him to school in the morning, I end up having to tell him a story along the way. I’ll usually ask him what kind of a story he wants, and it ranges from pirates, monster trucks, Spider-Man, Tron, exploring volcanoes, airplanes, and running a fishing boat.
His favorite video games right now are Tron (he loves the movies) and Angry Birds. He’s getting competitive too! He wants to win, and with Angry Birds you can earn 3-stars if you beat a level efficiently, and he tries and tries again to get the 3-stars. Mommy also likes Angry Birds, and she and Kelton are always talking about who’s further (Mommy destroys him though).
We recently took a family trip to St. Louis. We started out at the Arch (or "ouch" is more how it comes out from Kelton) because Kelton had been begging to see it for months. He thought it was really cool. We then went to The Butterfly House. This was mainly meant for Isla, but because it kind of freaked her out, Kelton actually enjoyed it more. But what the whole family loved the most was going to The City Museum! That place is AWESOME! They have stories and stories of climbing and sliding, nooks and crannies, and all kinds of things to explore and experience. Such a blast! Kelton wore himself out! Heck, he wore me out, because he wanted me to keep up with him!

Well, sorry to disappoint, but Santa did not bring an "i-Pyad" to Kelton for Christmas. Despite both sets of grandparents thinking that he should get one... No, instead Kelton received an iPod Touch. He seemed a little disappointed until we told him it was basically a "baby iPad." We put some games on it like Spiderman, Tron, Avatar, and Shrek Carts, and of course he loves it now. ...and so does Isla! He’s constantly running it out of battery power.
He also received some new games for his Nintendo DSi. His favorite is a new version of Super Mario Brothers, which Daddy really enjoys too. It’s just like the old-school Super Mario Brothers from the original NES -- just with a few new tricks. None of the 3D stuff that they were doing for quite a while.
Beyond that, I’d say that his packages of Legos were his favorite. He loves building. He usually does pretty well for 15 or 20 minutes, following instructions. But at a certain point he gets tired and Mommy and Daddy have to finish it up. Then the next day is usually him getting upset at Isla as she starts to pull it apart!
For his pre-K Christmas program the teachers wanted him to have a speaking-part because they said his voice carries really well (we know what that means), but Kelton decided he didn’t want to do that so he played one of the three wisemen who were basically back-up singers. He did pretty good!
So far this winter they’ve had a good number of snow-days off already. Most of the time he’s pretty happy about no school. But a couple of weeks ago he was "star student" for the week, where he gets asked to do special things and bring in show-and-tell items. So when he was shorted one day of being star student he was kind of upset about that.
We’re still hoping to get our house sold and move back up to Haubstadt. Jamie and I were thinking that it would be a good idea to get him involved in something like baseball this spring so that he could meet some of the boys he’d be starting Kindergarten with. He told us he didn’t want to do baseball, so we asked him if he’d prefer something like karate, soccer, or something like piano or guitar lessons... He thought about it for a bit and said "mmm...I don’t think I want to do any of those." So we asked what he’d like to do... Golf. I laughed and asked him why? "Well, I’m pretty good at it on the Wii, " was his reply! Oh Kelton...
